What prototyping shops actually ship

Most paid prototype work is structural or near-structural: jigs, packaging samples, brackets, and iteration parts. FDM in PLA/PETG (and ABS/ASA when enclosure allows) covers that path without resin wash/cure overhead.

When enclosure belongs on day one

If the machine shares a room with non-operators, or ABS/ASA is weekly work, start enclosed. Open-frame entry machines can validate demand in a dedicated shop—plan the upgrade when materials or room policy tighten.

Buy volume for the largest parts you ship weekly. Entry and mid machines are enough for many packaging and fixture shops; stretch to Plus/K2 Pro class when helmet-scale or batch nests are already selling.
